Hear from our model maker Richard Braddish.
Listen to the story behind the scale model of our local area prominently displayed on level 2 of Town Hall House. This important urban planning tool has been used since the mid-1980s as an essential resource for the public, architects, planners and others making decisions about development. It was first commissioned in 1986, with the first section completed in 2000.
The model has grown alongside the city, with new sections added as our boundaries have expanded, and today it contains around 4,000 buildings.
The team of skilled model makers who meticulously maintain and update the model use a colour-coded system to clearly identify existing, proposed and under construction buildings.
This miniature representation of our city shows how Sydney has evolved over time and helps us to imagine the future of the urban form.
You can also discover the fascinating world of model making and the people who keep ours up to date at a new exhibition at Customs House.
