The One-Day Epic: Poetry Workshop with Rico Craig

This world is full of epic, otherworldly moments: clouds shifting, the hunt for new earrings, people changing car tyres. These everyday moments give poetry its texture and provide poets with an endless seam of inspiration for their writing.

In this poetry workshop, Rico Craig will guide you to sift through the seemingly mundane, searching for the experiences you can expand to epic significance. You will bring your poetic vision to bear on the ordinary and look at the way your own inclination toward the poetic can be used to expand a reader’s perception of the worlds we share in our poetry.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to write and share pieces which explore the links between the everyday and the epic.

Expected learning outcomes

In this workshop, participants will:

1. Learn to find a voice that balances intimate knowledge of the world around us and the desire to write poetry with emotional power and resonance

2. Learn how to examine the poetics of the everyday world, acquiring techniques that enable you to write about the ordinary with the intensity and richness of myth

3. Gain an introduction to a range of recent poetic works which engage with the ideas of ‘epic’ and ‘myth’ in unexpected ways.
