Wednesday 17 June from 10:45am to 12pm
Come along to the Ron Williams Community Centre to celebrate Refugee Week
Join us for an Iraq inspired morning tea and hear from guest speaker Nawfel, a Refugee Ambassador with the Refugee Council of Australia.
Nawfel was born in Baghdad, Iraq, into the Mandaean faith, a small religious minority that has long faced persecution in the region.
He was studying Pharmacy at the University of Baghdad when the 2003 invasion of Iraq intensified threats against his community.
Two years short of completing his degree, Nawfel was forced to flee in 2004 to survive.
Nawfel was later granted a visa for Australia and arrived in December 2005.
Nawfel is now an active participant in the Refugee Council's Stories for Change Program .
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear Nawfel's story and connect with one another over a lovely Iraq morning tea from Parliament on King.
Parliament on King is a catering-focused social enterprise. Their mission is to serve beautiful food, while providing opportunities to asylum seekers, refugees, and newly arrived migrants to Australia.
Community transport may be available for local eligible residents.
We aim to deliver inclusive and accessible events. If you have any particular access or communication needs please contact Jessica Mayr on 0418 696 464 or email jmayr@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.
