Redfern History Talk

When

Wednesday 9 September from 11am to 11:45am

Come along to the Ron Williams Community Centre Open Day during History Week.

The Ron Williams Community Centre celebrates 60 years this year.

Hear from Laila Ellmoos, City Historian, talk about the history of the centre and Redfern.

Ron Williams Community Centre began operating on 17 August 1966 and was officially opened on 3 November 1966. It was one of 15 welfare centres opened by the City of Sydney between 1958 and 1967.

We began providing dedicated services for its older residents from 1956 with the recruitment of a female social worker, Catherine Bowen. She soon set about establishing a Meals on Wheels service, and later welfare centres to provide hot lunchtime meals and social activities. The centre continues to provide services to the community 60 years on.

This event is one of the activities on offer at the Ron Williams Community Centre Open Day.

History Week is the annual, state-wide celebration of history organised by the History Council of New South Wales. This year's theme is Keeping Stories. See what else is on

We aim to deliver inclusive and accessible events. If you have any particular access or communication needs, please contact Mon, the Community Services Worker at the Ron Williams Community Centre, on 02 9265 9180 or email mzhang@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.

The centre is open Monday to Friday 9:30am to 3:30pm. It has free computers, wifi, snooker, table tennis, tea, coffee, biscuits, sewing machines, and books to borrow. Explore the whole program
