Stories from the City Archives

Archives are much more than collections of records.  

They connect us to the people, places and moments that have shaped our history. They preserve the evidence that supports accountability and democracy, while safeguarding the stories, memories and experiences that help define who we are as a community. 

The City of Sydney Archives is one of Australia's most significant archival collections. As the official archive of the City of Sydney council, it holds records dating back to the council's establishment in 1842. It is also a unique collecting archive, documenting the rich and diverse communities that have called Sydney home. 

As the City of Sydney Archives celebrates its 50th anniversary and joins the festivities of History Week 2026, this special event shines a spotlight on the power of archives and the people who work hard to protect them. 

Speakers, including archivists, City of Sydney staff and community researchers, will discuss how archives can uncover forgotten stories, shed new light on historical events and strengthen connections to community and place.
