Tuesday 10 June from 6:30pm to 7:30pm
Hani Abdile was forced to leave Somalia and come to Australia seeking protection in 2014. During her 11 months in immigration detention, she found healing in poetry and developed a love for writing. Her first book of 43 poems, I Will Rise, was published by Writing Through Fences in 2016.
Don’t miss Hani’s reflections on her journey, from fleeing a civil war and surviving life in Australian detention, to finding her own voice and using the power of it to shine a light on injustice and champion kindness and compassion. Join her in conversation as she outlines her creative journey, sharing stories and insights about how she found joy and hope through writing and poetry.
Hani is an honorary member of PEN International, a lead member of Writing Through Fences, and an ambassador for the Refugee Advice and Casework Service (RACS).
She has appeared on the ABC, the Sydney Morning Herald and Shark Island Productions. Her work has been recognised with numerous awards.
Host:
Danny Gardner: prolific poet, seasoned presenter and passionate advocate for poetry and storytelling. With decades of experience showcasing some of Sydney’s creative voices, Danny brings a wealth of insight to this inspiring discussion.
Following the talk, a Q&A session will delve deeper into Hani's creative journey.
This is a free event open to all ages.
