A new, woman-led, interactive, immersive and independent experiential playground will open on 22 November in Chippendale, in Sydney’s inner suburbs – at a scale and level of detail that has not been done in Australia.

Comprising multisensory installations such as holographic moon rooms to upside-down trains, mirrored mazes, and perception puzzles, Mind Games: Art Alive brings together illusion artists, prop makers, and perception artists to create a playful museum-style experience that offers people a chance to connect with art and each other affordably and unforgettably.

Exhibiting artists include but are not limited to:

  • Australian film industry sculptor Hayley Egan

  • Ngarabal and Gomeroi multimedia artist Jeremy Worrall

  • Akiyoshi Kitaoka, a Japanese psychology professor at Ritsumeikan University, is known worldwide for his optical illusions.

With a focus on playfulness and creativity, Mind Games: Art Alive has commissioned more than 60 bespoke works from 15 artists that explore perception-shifting concepts, requiring between 60 and 150 minutes in total to experience. Visitors will encounter sensory experiences of smell and sound, technology-driven pieces, such as:

  • The Holographic Moon Room – a 3D projection space that takes visitors to a surreal lunar landscape.

  • Levitation Station – an upside-down train illusion that redefines the laws of gravity.

  • The Movie Magic Room – step behind the scenes to see how cinematic sound and illusions come to life.

And exiting through the gift shop won’t be a hassle – shoppers can stir their senses of taste and rhythm through the venue’s musical lollipops.

Situated on one of Australia’s most notable streets for cultural heritage and education – Broadway in Chippendale – the venue’s design and build have been shaped to enhance and extend the immersive experiences on offer via a seamless walkthrough across two levels that feels stepping through different portals, giving urban edgy vibes.

Set to open to the public from 22 November at levels one and two, 154-160 Broadway, Chippendale, Mind Games: Art Alive will be available to the public for an initial 12-month period. Exhibitions will change over this time based on the season/theme.

The location is within easy reach of transport, parking and food options and has air conditioning.

Education groups are eligible for a 15 per cent discount.
