Sydney’s iconic queer penguins’ story of love, fame and loss.

The world was introduced to the Sydney Sea Life Aquarium’s most famous couple in 2018 when it was announced that Magic and Sphen, the world’s first gay penguin couple, were expecting. Their story quickly became international news. Magic and Sphen is an exploration of this iconic queer couple, their partnership pre-fame, and how their story gripped the world. Set to the backdrop of the 2017 marriage equality plebiscite, we follow their journey through the ups and downs of living in the aquarium as they prepare for their new life as penguin parents. The play culminates in 2024 with the untimely and tragic death of Sphen.

Presented by Timmy. Directed by Casey Elder. Written by Timmy and Sophea Op. Cast includes Timmy Mannering. Running time: 60 mins, no interval.
