Thursday 17 July from 11am to 12pm
Blast off into a captivating exploration of space innovation with the Powerhouse Volunteers.
Uncover extraordinary stories from the museum’s rich collection of space-related objects. This engaging talk will highlight the ways science, technology, and imagination have propelled humanity toward the stars.
Through the lens of three passionate speakers, we’ll examine key artefacts that trace the evolution of space exploration—from early speculative science fiction to real-world missions and technological breakthroughs. Learn how Australia's contributions have shaped space science, and discover curious objects like astronaut food, spacecraft models, and experimental tools once envisioned for life beyond Earth.
The presentation will also spotlight the surprising cultural side of space travel: how artists, designers, and storytellers have imagined—and reimagined—the cosmos. See how ideas from the past continue to influence our visions of the future.
Whether you're a space enthusiast, sci-fi lover, or simply curious about the universe, this session will offer fresh insights and inspiring stories.
After the talk, you'll have the chance to ask questions, join in discussion, and view a selection of space-related objects up close. Our volunteers will be on hand to share further insights and resources.
