Each year, a day of remembering is held in August at The Australian Monument to the Great Irish Famine (1845-1852) in Hyde Park Barracks.
This is an opportunity to remember and acknowledge the lives of the thousands of Irish in their destitute times and those who made Australia their home. This includes descendants of the 4114 Irish Orphan Girls who arrived as a direct consequence of the Great Hunger. Many of the attendees are descendants of the Orphan Girls, and those whose Irish ancestors have arrived since the First Fleet.
There will be speakers, music, and quiet time of reflection for laying of flowers at the Memorial Wall.
