Tuesday 26 May from 6pm to 9:30pm
Fierce competition, lychee martinis and classic Chinese-inspired snacks meet at Food Mahjong Club, a popular Manhattan tournament run by Food architect founder and community builder Dong-Ping Wong.
In its first-ever iteration outside of the US, Food Mahjong Club takes over Mary’s Underground with a tournament of the four-player, tile-based game, emceed by Wong.
After a series of practice rounds, the tournament kicks off, beginning first with tables of four until, after a quarter and semifinal round, only four players remain.
Founded by Wong and Bella Janssens of the New York architecture practice Food in 2021, Food Mahjong Club encouraged visitors back to Chinatown after Covid lockdowns.
The seasonal event initiative is not only about bringing people together to play a game, but to aid in the appreciation of Chinese culture and its evolution in the face of gentrification in the Manhattan district.
