Fashioning the Chinese Community in Sydney in the Global Sixties - Through the Lens of Chinese Women's Associations

Hear from Dr. Mei-Fen Kuo as she shows how Chinese women's associations in Sydney shaped their communities and identities during the 1960s.

The talk explores how, through cultural events, volunteer work and community activities, they navigated the challenges of inclusion and exclusion in Australian society.

The research highlights how these women used platforms like local street festivals and fundraising efforts to express and redefine their roles, fostering a sense of sisterhood and agency within the diaspora. The paper also examines how their experiences reflect broader global trends and social shifts of the 1960s.

Dr. Mei-Fen Kuo is a lecturer at Macquarie University, in the Department of International Studies: Language and Culture. She teaches and researches modern Chinese history with a focus on diaspora identity and transnational mobility.

This event is hosted by the Chinese Women's Association of Australia Inc.
