A group of four artists are inspired by the natural landscape of Australia and Turkey.
Three sketchers and painters, and one ceramicist, attempt to encapsulate a view, whether close up or from a distance, of native flora, cliffs, underground dwellings or seascapes, filtering their experiences of these environments and their imaginings.
They use mixed media: charcoal, gouache, pencils, acrylic and oil paints and mixed clays to depict their own unique views.
For ceramicist Pam Smith, depictions of hazy bush colour and shapes are added to large vessels – their function open to interpretation – vase, umbrella holder, decorative art? Philippa Granwal presents the underground city of Derinkuyu from the imaginative perspective of someone taking refuge there. Kate Parker’s work includes detailed postcard sized landscapes which record places visited and imagined. Irene Whitton focusses on movement and energy within the Australian landscape with an emphasis on water and land.
Overall, the series invites the viewer to stand in the shoes of the artist to gaze and reflect on their view of the natural world and wonder at the frisson of familiarity or foreignness.
