The Korean Cultural Centre Australia unveils a window gallery exhibition featuring new artworks by artist NOT, inspired by the Korean traditional roof tiles, Giwa.

Artist NOT primarily works with glass and ceramics, emphasising the use of discontinued and discarded materials. Drawing inspiration from Australia’s diverse cultural landscape, the artist often incorporates spiritual and aesthetic elements from Asia into their work.

In this exhibition, Artist NOT elevates and protects the roof tiles, typically seen as mundane and practical. This intention is emphasised by the placement of tiles on plinths, connecting them to the outside world as part of nature through large windows in front of the Korean traditional house Hanok.

Artist NOT highly crafted the glass and ceramic pieces in his Sydney studio and at the Canberra glassworks. Notably, his bamboo glasswork inspired by the roof tiles reinterprets the straight cuts characteristic of bamboo through the transparent and fragile nature of glass, offering a fresh perspective on the familiar.

“Inspired by the roof tiles of a traditional hanok house that sits on permanent display at the Korean Cultural Centre, up on the roof shifts perspectives and illuminates understanding in a formally beautiful installation that looks at ideas of home and sanctuary through a unique cross-cultural lens.”

This event is part of Sydney Craft Week 2024.
