Sunday 14 September from 2pm to 4pm
Art Gallery Cinema presents a special screening of Limite (1931), an astonishing landmark of early Latin American cinema with a newly commissioned live score.
Directed by filmmaker Mário Peixoto at the age of 21, _Limite _has been acclaimed by the likes of Orson Welles and David Bowie. Three castaways share stories of their past lives while adrift on a lifeboat off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Striking camera angles and flashbacks conjure a mood between dream and reality, a journey into the mind and out to sea.
Described by legendary Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha as the ‘Mona Lisa of our cinema’, _Limite _was scarcely seen in the decades following its premiere, existing as a legend until its belated restoration.
Originally set to the music of Erik Satie, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky, the film will be accompanied live by Worlds Only, a musical supergroup based between Sydney and Barcelona.
