Are you an emerging writer who is finished, or partway through a draft, but haven't worked with an editor before? Do you have a publishing opportunity with a publishing house, literary journal or just want to work independently with a freelance editor to get the most out of your manuscript? Then this seminar is for you!

Join experienced editor, Catherine Hill, to learn about the different levels and stages in a typical edit and the types of editorial intervention. You will also gain insights into how to most effectively communicate with and work with an editor so that you feel supported, heard and understood.

The seminar will also discuss:

  • The role of the editor and how they can help, or hinder, your work.

  • Finding the right editor and building an effective relationship with them.

  • The work of editing – from both the author and the editor's perspective.

  • Coping with deadlines.

  • How to troubleshoot if things aren't going as you expected.

There will be a live Q&A with enrolled participants at the end of the session, and opportunities throughout to discuss all these elements and more.

Expected Learning Outcomes

In this seminar, participants will gain an understanding of:

1. The stages of a typical edit (fiction and non-fiction).

2. Editors' expectations when working with authors, and of how and when to push back as an author.

3. The nuts and bolts, and logistics, of working through the different kinds of edits.
