Stuck in a hotel room because of traffic jams caused by a Papal visit, prominent Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini came across a copy of the New Testament. Known widely as a Marxist and atheist, and self-describing as ‘an unbeliever who has a nostalgia for a belief,’ Pasolini was struck by the Gospel of Matthew (John was too mystical, Mark too vulgar, and Luke too sentimental). The Gospel According to St Matthew came from that reading – a classic of the neorealist tradition.
Please join us at the St James’ Institute for a free screening of the film and an optional pizza dinner ($20), with an introduction by film buff Phil Walker-Harding.
