Richard Collins is a painter living in Mollymook on the NSW south coast.
His new show at The Shop Gallery, Glebe, consists of oils, gouaches, watercolours and drawings made after his return from fifteen years living in Melbourne. During that time Richard completed an Honours BA in Painting at RMIT before setting up a studio and exhibiting regularly. He has been a finalist in the Paul Guest Drawing Prize and the Grace Cossington-Smith Art Award, and has exhibited twice previously at The Shop Gallery.
Inspired by the post-impressionist project of fusing observation with subjectivity - Cezanne’s “little sensation” - Richard’s work is an attempt to make fresh and vigorous art from the things he sees around him daily. He paints and draws in the traditional genres of still life, landscape, interiors and portraiture, working to bring out equally the qualities of the subject and the medium used. In particular. having a garden again after living in a flat has given Richard a new and stimulating subject, as seen in this exhibition.
