Thursday 19 June from 8pm to 10pm
Join us for an extraordinary evening with Gina Chick!
Gina Chick is a re-wilding facilitator, adventurer, writer, and speaker whose life story is as inspiring as it is unique. Writing runs deep in Gina’s veins: her grandmother, Charmian Clift, was a groundbreaking author, essayist, and Australia’s first female newspaper columnist. Charmian’s life with George Johnston (My Brother Jack) on Hydra, surrounded by Leonard Cohen and other bohemian expats, became the stuff of legend. Gina’s mother, Suzanne Chick, discovered this remarkable lineage at 48 and shared her journey in the acclaimed memoir Searching for Charmian.
Gina’s own story is no less extraordinary. From her unconventional childhood to her triumphant journey as the inaugural winner of Alone Australia in 2023, Gina has lived a life defined by resilience, courage, and a deep connection to nature. Over 67 unforgettable days in the wild, Gina captured the hearts of more than 5.5 million viewers across Australia, emerging as the second woman ever to win an Alone solo challenge.
Now, Gina brings her powerful story to life in her memoir We Are the Stars, one of the most moving and transformative books you will ever read. From dancing through Sydney’s hidden nightlife of the ’90s and falling for a conman to fleeing into the wilderness for healing, Gina’s journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Her wondrous love affair with life’s deepest lessons—woven through encounters with jungles, storms, wolf-dens, orphaned animals, and the wisdom of the body—makes this a memoir unlike any other.
At the Petersham Bowling Club, Gina will share tales of her indomitable life, her profound connection to nature, and the inspiration behind We Are the Stars. With humour, passion, and raw honesty, she will guide us through her creative process, her adventures, and the wisdom she’s gained along the way.
This event is part of our monthly Readers series celebrating books, authors, and their stories. Michaela Kalowski, a renowned interviewer and curator for writers’ festivals, will lead the conversation. Michaela has interviewed luminaries such as Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell, and Amos Oz and is the curator of ABC RN’s Big Weekend of Books.
Don’t miss this captivating evening with Gina Chick—a woman whose story will inspire and move you like no other.
