Paddy Pallin Inspire:Ewelina Kozok, Crossing Africa Overland

When

Tuesday 23 June from 6pm to 9pm

Cost

Adult: $10Child: $0

This presentation follows a journey through remote and often unpredictable regions, where logistics, borders, and safety were constant challenges. Ewelina travelled with Michael, who accompanied her 24/7, and at times they were joined by an additional friend.

Along the way, they experienced the realities of travelling in complex environments, including civil war conditions in Guinea and corruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Guinea-Bissau, a stingray incident became a painful survival moment, while in South Africa a kayaking accident added to the physical demands of the journey. There were also long stretches with no transport in post-war Angola, navigating isolation and areas still affected by landmines.

The journey was filled with unpredictable encounters — from dealing with drunk soldiers at checkpoints to crossing parts of the Sahara in Niger and Chad in stolen vehicles. Yet alongside these challenges came moments of connection, generosity, and insight into everyday life across the continent. The trip took place in 2007.

This is a raw and honest account of long-distance travel, where adaptability, patience, and trust become essential.

Bio:

Ewelina Kozok is an experienced traveller who has explored over 120 countries across all continents. Originally from Poland, she has been based in Australia since 2003, where she developed a strong connection to the outdoors.

She has a deep passion for the ocean, mountains, and adventure, often combining travel with active exploration in remote and challenging environments. Her approach to travel focuses on immersion, resilience, and understanding local cultures beyond typical tourist routes.

Over the years, she has experienced a wide range of environments, from coastal regions and high mountains to isolated and logistically complex areas.

Ewelina’s journeys are shaped by curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to step outside comfort zones. She shares her experiences to inspire others to explore the world in a more conscious, adventurous, and meaningful way.

The Inspire Adventure Series is a regular monthly event aiming to get you inspired by presenters who will be sharing their outdoor adventures through multimedia slide shows. Besides watching the presentation and Q&A, there will be a time to connect, chat, exchange ideas, motivate each other, and maybe even to find a partner for your next adventure?

If you have a chance, please bring children and teenagers, we’d love showing them too!

Paddy Pallin is planning to deliver nine sessions in 2026 from February up to October.

Paddy Pallin will provide some snacks and drinks for the evening, please bring your own food if you have any dietary requirements. You are also welcome to BYO drinks including liquor.
