In this one-week course, participants will learn about the personal essay form, and how to leverage its many benefits to tell compelling stories. From intimate reflections to cultural commentary, the personal essay offers writers a powerful way to explore lived experience and connect with readers.

Through reading successful personal essays, and group discussion, you will explore essay format and structure, and develop your own ideas and personal style. You will also look at pitching to literary journals and publishers in Australia and have a draft piece workshopped by peers and your tutor, author and editor Zoya Patel.

Expected learning outcomes

In this course participants will:

1. Gain an understanding of the personal essay as a form, including structure, style, tone and how to successfully combine these elements.

2. Draft/outline a personal essay on a topic of their choice (writing prompts also provided), with peer and tutor feedback.

3. Discover information about where to pitch personal essays in Australia.

Participant requirements

Internet access and confidence using basic computer software are essential for this program. Participants would be encouraged to bring a draft essay into the week, or they will need to draft one during the week.
