Composer Edwin Montgomery unveils original live score for Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror at exclusive Halloween screening at Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace.
Prepare for a spine-tingling Halloween experience like no other as composer and multi-instrumentalist Edwin Montgomery takes centre stage with an original live score to F.W. Murnau's timeless 1922 horror masterpiece, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. This exclusive event marks the Sydney premiere of Montgomery's haunting composition, adding a new dimension to a cinematic gem that has chilled audiences for over a century.
Edwin Montgomery, known for their versatility as a composer, recently crafted the score for Nosferatu during a week-long artist's residency. Their impressive background in classical composition, including a Masters Degree from AFTRS in composing for screen, has paved the way for a diverse career spanning film, games, immersive theatre, installations, and mixed media artworks.
Montgomery's film credits include the Oscar-nominated feature documentary Time, which received the Best Documentary Directing award at Sundance 2020, sonic-driven interactive multimedia artworks and games, such as Neon Cyborg Cat Club (winner of the Freeplay Experimental Game Award) and composing music for a tribute to the late John Olsen, which was projected onto the iconic Sydney Opera House sails as part of Vivid Sydney 2023.
The 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror holds its place in history as the first and arguably the best vampire film ever made. A century later, it still sends shivers down the spine with its timeless and chilling tale.
Join us this Halloween at Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace for a special screening of this cinematic jewel, made even more extraordinary by the live performance of Edwin Montgomery's original score. Using a combination of loop pedals and ghostly distortions, Edwin masterfully weaves synths, violin, guitar, theremin, mandolin, and percussion into an eerie and provocative soundscape that perfectly complements the darkly Gothic atmosphere of the film.
