“…she is able to make people happy, as much as she is capable to evoke sophisticated feelings, like sarcasm, irony or frustration. Being in one of her concerts is to be alive!”

Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter-flutist Melanie Charles is set to stun Sydney audiences on Sunday, October 26th, in a headline performance for the 2025 Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival at Mary’s Underground.Charles, renowned for her genre-bending style of jazz, soul and R&B, mixed with electronics, samples and hints of her Haitian roots, will perform with her Trio; Charles (vocals, flutes, effects), with Ignabu(drums, percussion) and Paul Wilson Bae (piano, key bass), the group promising a night of genre-defying, boundary-pushing sound, together celebrating Rev John Coltrane’s legacy with found footage, interviews, and samples from his contemporaries.

Charles’s unique style has been embraced by a range of heavy-hitting jazz, R&B, hip hop and pop artists, seeing her work with Gorillaz, The Roots, SZA, Jean Grae, Mach-Hommy,and Wynton Marsalis. Her television appearances include The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, SNLGood Morning America, and HBO’s Vinyl.

Showcasing her eclecticism, Charles recently released the album Y’all Don’t (Really) Care About Black Women on the esteemed Verve Records (2021), and Hotel San Claudio, a collaboration with Mark de Clive-Lowe and Shigeto, on !K7 Music(2023).

One Night Only! Don’t miss this coveted performance from one of international jazz’s newly established talents in an intimate venue setting.
