Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert is delighted to present for the first time in Australia, Māramatanga [enlightenment], Lisa Reihana’s latest photographic series and third solo presentation with the gallery. The exhibition was developed alongside Māramatanga, a 6-meter-high moving image commissioned by Auckland University in 2024.
Māramatanga _[enlightenment] _is an impressive and important new body of work described by Reihana as a “love letter" to her time at Elam, Auckland University, where she studied fine art more than 3 decades ago. Each photograph presents life-size figures representing ātua and other ancestors against imagery of the natural world – the sea, mangroves and forests that evolve to form patterns in the background.
An image from the series will also be presented in the Gallery's booth, G02, Sydney Contemporary, Carriageworks and in Voyager, a survey exhibition at Ngununggula, Retford Park.
