Floorplay distills the atmosphere of the queer dancefloor into ritual gestures. Movements drawn from ravers, flirting bodies and collective tides are stretched into meditations on breath and endurance. The body becomes a portal, inviting entrance into shifting states of rhythm, attention and becoming.
Floorplay is a video and live performance installation that transforms the front window of the City of Sydney Creative Studios into a queer techno portal. The work explores the erotic and ritual codes of the dancefloor, drawing on the artists’ experience as DJ, performer and participant.
The video shows the artist performing sequences inspired by queer nightlife: gestures of cruising, subtle eye contact, and the choreographies of flirtation. However rather than being obscene, the movements are slowed, exaggerated and abstracted, reimagined as meditative rituals. Breath, sweat and exhaustion evoke the physical intensity of all-night raves while reframing them as acts of devotion.
The work also reinterprets viral “how to dance to hard techno” tutorials from social media. Transposed into a ritual context, they shift from parody to endurance practice, blurring boundaries between spectacle, instruction and spiritual exercise.
Accompanying the video, Red will activate the site with an endurance performance work on Friday 12th December.
Floorplay invites commuters and passers-by to glimpse into queer ritual in public space, reflecting on desire, repetition and the body in motion.
