As electric as ever, Melbourne garage rock band Eddy Current Suppression Ring take to Tumbalong Nights for their first full Sydney show in more than fifteen years, joined by Ethiopian-Australian five-piece Chikchika.
One of Australia’s most revered underground bands, Eddy Current Suppression Ring (ECSR) have always maintained their DIY spirit ever since the four-piece formed in 2003 – even when their Australian Music Prize-winning second album Primary Colours broke into the mainstream.
Called “the definition of timeless” by Guardian Australia, ECSR returned to the limelight last year after a lengthy hiatus with a huge show at Federation Square and a fresh EP Shapes and Forms, proving as raw, explosive and catchy as ever.
They’ll be joined by Chikchika, a Melbourne band led by Ethiopian musicians Haftu Reda, Anbessa Gebrehiwot and Mulu Baqqalaa, backed live by Dale Gorfinkel and Michael McNab.
Singing about love, distance, separation and culture, their music embraces new grooves with traditional East African instrumentation, including the krar (five-string lyre) and masinko (single-string violin), alongside resonate vocals sung in Oromo and Tigrinya.
Free for all to enjoy, Tumbalong Nights ignites Darling Quarter’s Tumbalong Park with 23 nights of music during Vivid Sydney, with a cross-cultural lineup of live music from international legends, Australian icons and emerging stars, plus DJs.
