Dior Mahnken and Nicole Hayes are printmakers/mixed media artists from southern Sydney. Both have an affinity with paper, print and thread. Pushing the boundaries of these mediums, they seek to make works that become sculptural or embellished.
Nicole uses charcoal printing, Dior uses monoprint and image transfer. For both artists these printing methods are usually just the substrate, the beginnings of their more elaborated works.
Paper is manipulated, crushed and folded, punctured and stitched by hand and machine. The works reference women’s place, femininity, ageing and what it is to be comfortable in one’s own skin.
Both artists also explore the idea of repurposing with Nicole printing from old garments and Dior image transferring from old Vogue magazines.
