Thursday 19 March from 4pm to 11:45pm
The Chand Raat Eid Festival (CREF) is one of Australia’s longest-running and most vibrant multicultural celebrations. Held each year on the eve of Eid, it brings together people from all backgrounds to mark a joyful moment of reflection, connection, and cultural pride.
The term Chand Raat, meaning “night of the moon” in Urdu and Hindi, refers to the evening when the new moon is sighted. This marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr. Traditionally, this night is filled with celebration, shopping, and community gatherings. CREF honours this tradition and reimagines it within Australia’s diverse social fabric. As a result, it creates a space where everyone feels welcome to join in the festivities.
Its about food, markets, music, rides, family activies and most importantly FUN!
About the Chand Raat Eid Festival
The Chand Raat Eid Festival signifies the end of Ramadan and the eve of Eid al-Fitr in the Islamic calendar. It’s an inclusive, family-friendly event designed for people of all backgrounds. Visitors can enjoy henna and face painting, food stalls, amusement rides, community booths, and captivating live performances.
At its heart, CREF follows a simple principle: “Promoting Culture, Harmony & Friendship.” The name Chand Raat literally means “the night of the Eid moon” – a beautiful reminder of how one moment can unite communities in celebration.
From humble beginnings to a major festival
Founded in Sydney in 1998, CREF began as a modest community event. Over the years, it has grown into a major cultural celebration that now draws more than 10,000 visitors annually.
Each year, the event features live cultural performances, food and fashion stalls, entertainment zones, amusement rides, and areas dedicated to local businesses and creators. In addition, CREF’s unique format blends traditional celebration with modern multicultural expression, making it festive, inclusive, and relevant to contemporary Australia.
A celebration with meaning
Beyond the entertainment, CREF plays a vital role in fostering cultural understanding and inclusion. It connects people across generations, faiths, and languages while supporting local enterprise and community spirit. For many attendees, it’s not just a celebration of Eid, but a celebration of belonging – and of the Australia they call home.
Over the past 25 years, CREF has become a trusted and anticipated event on the national calendar. Its success reflects a deep respect for heritage, an embrace of diversity, and a shared joy in coming together.
