When

Thursday 27 August from 10am to 10:45am

Deb Fitzpatrick loves working with young people to inspire them to dive into their own creativity. In this session, she’ll explore how real life fuels her fiction — with a focus on Tawny Trouble and The Amazing Spencer Gray, her adventure-in-nature books that enthrall young readers. Students will be guided through short writing activities to explore writing about events from their own lives.

Target audience: Suitable for Stage 2 and Stage 3 students (children aged 8-12) but all are welcome.

This session, artworks, film and sound clips are protected by copyright and may not be recorded, reproduced or used in any way without the express written consent of the State Library of NSW.

This online event will be held on Zoom. Register here to receive the Zoom link to join the session. For help with Zoom, go here.

Deb Fitzpatrick is the author of 11 books for readers of all ages, which have received awards in Australia, been published in the US and optioned for film. Her latest novel for middle readers is Tawny Trouble (2025), and a new edition of her debut young adult novel, 90 Packets of Instant Noodles, was also published in 2025. Deb regularly teaches creative writing and has a Master of Arts in creative writing from the University of Western Australia. She loves hiking and bushwalking with her family. When she can, she sneaks away to a shack in the karri forest of the south-west of Western Australia.
